When I saw this hat at Target, I immediately knew it was perfect for a DIY project! I’ve been admiring beautiful sun hats like this one from Tuckernuck and these from Sarah Bray Bermuda for a while now. They are stunning but a little bit out of my budget at the moment! If you’ve been eying these hats and feeling the same way, I hope you find this DIY helpful!
After a trip to Michael’s and a little bit of measuring, I was able to come up with exactly what I was after. It turned out even better than I had planned!
So, without further ado, here is a DIY tutorial for an elevated sun hat! If you’re more of a visual learner, I’ll also be posting a Reel on my Instagram as well!
DIY Elevated Sun Hat
Creating your own ribbon-tied sun hat is surprisingly more simple than you may think! The first thing you’ll need? A straw hat you can accessorize. My sun hat was on clearance at Target, so I wasn’t quite as nervous to try this project. (I actually found it on for $7 in-store–check your local Target!)
Aside from your straw hat, there are only four things you’ll need (I’m linking exactly what I used!)
Supplies:
Ball-Point Pen
STEP 1:
Take your measuring tape and wrap it around the base of the hat to find the center of each side of your hat. This is where you will place the eyelets and where the ribbon will pull through. Mark these spots with a tiny pen mark–they will be cut out in the next step!
STEP 2:
Use your Eyelet and Setter Kit to place your eyelet on each side of the hat. My kit came with instructions, but I also found this video helpful! (Note: you could use a grommet and eyelet instead, but I found that because it was such a small hole, I didn’t need a heavy-duty solution. I also think you could reinforce the eyelet with E6000 glue if needed!)
STEP 3:
The last and most fun step–add your ribbon! I chose this sage green, but I also have my eye on some vintage ribbons from Etsy. I cut about 72 inches for my sash, but you can definitely go longer or shorter if you’d like!
There you have it! This elevated sun hat is a beautiful, simple, and cost-effective project. Now that my sun hat is complete, I’m looking forward to buying all kinds of ribbons to accessorize with!
If you create this in your own home, I’d absolutely love to see it! Tag me on Instagram @JuliaAshleyEast so I can share!
